Thoughts on a mid term election

One of the more interesting campaign promises made by HEP Nasheed is the promise of a mid term election if he wins. A mid term elections - it was argued would give the people the opportunity to participate in a free and fair elections.

At that time, DRP said on several occasions that a mid term election is unconstitutional although now that the table has turned, I am certain they would strongly advocate for Nasheed to keep to his promise.

First, is a mid term election unconstitutional? Clause 125 of the Constitution specifically provides for a situation where the President and his Vice President resign their positions - in which case it states that an election should be held. Therefore, without going into further details; it is a simple rebuttal for the argument that a mid term election would be unconstitutional.

Second and more importantly should Nasheed call for a mid-term election?

The reason given at that time was that (as mentioned above) - it would give us the opportunity to vote in a free and fair election. It was based on the premise that the October elections would not be free and fair. I think it would be very difficult for anyone to argue now, that the election was in fact not free and fair.

All parties who contested have accepted the results and several observers both local and international have endorsed the election as free and fair. True, there were various issues including missing persons in the voter lists, duplication etc. But I do not believe and neither would any sensible person believe that it would have changed the outcome of the results. During the American elections, we heard news stories of people registering their pets in the voter lists, Obama spelt as Osama in some of the postal ballots and even incidents where cartoon characters were on the list. Nevertheless no one is contesting the validity and the outcome of the election.

My point is that it will be impossible to negate human error. Even with the time that the Elections Commission has to rectify issues with the lists, no doubt there would be issues in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Having said that, I firmly believe that for the most part, the October election was free and fair and any incidents which ever may have happened, would not have changed the outcome of the election.

If we accept that there was a free and fair elections; do we need another mid term election just to 'give the people the opportunity to vote in a free and fair election'?

Further, what we now need is consistency, stability and certainty. I certainly do not want the government to spend another 50 million for another election when it could be spent on projects that are in much need for funds. Also, holding an election would put us all in another spell of uncertainty where business would be less willing to invest and banks less willing to finance. This is something we cannot afford right now.

True, it is a campaign promise that Nasheed made and no doubt some people would have voted for him because of that. But should he do it just because he made the promise or should he do what is best for the country as a whole?

It was widely rumored that one faction of the alliance pushed hard for the election promise. If it is true, they would certainly not be happy if the idea is scrapped. I think Nasheed should take a decision that would benefit the country as a whole rather than do it just because he made a campaign promise.

I for one, would certainly be against a decision to hold mid term elections.

i think so far nasheed has been unable to keep his words. He is a man who finds it easy to make promises and then when the thing happens he very conveniently forgets what he has said. So this mid term election is going to be such a time where we will know what he truly is. I am one who voted for him simply cos he promised a mid term election and so did many of my friends who voted for him! I will be cheated if he does not do so!!

i think we need a good stable government that is accountable, transparent and that respect the letter of the law. If anni provides those, i don't mind him staying in power for 2 full terms. I would actually support it and campaign for him for the first time.

cant agree with you more mr.shahdy.We are already far behind on much needed reform to the structure and policies in this country, and we need to observe how it evolves during the next couple of terms once these reforms are in place to see if this is really working for us.

This was a highly volatile experiment involving a developing nation anyway, n today we are unexpectedly living in an experiment that worked, against all odds...

alot of uncertainty, amidst all that, i just dont see the point back tracking to basics once again..

we have already succeeded...

you should also add that going back to another election is highly costly and there just isnt any point in going back...

I agree with you Shahdy. A mid-term election would undoubtedly take the Nation back to square one and there would be unstability while we do not want to see that.

Therefore, Say no to a mid-term election!!!!!

I think the mid-term election should be held for 2 reasons..

First Anni made a very public promise that he would hold a mid-term election if he gets elected...

Second, and more importantly, I do not believe that Anni won, change won.... In the first election Maumoon got over 4o% of vote, while Anni got below 30%. Ofcourse, with the support of the remaining parties, Anni was elected in an either or situation... many people went for what they believed to be the lesser of the two evils... so yes, if the opinion of one citizen counts, I do think that a mid-term election should be held...

We are a breed used to being told certain things. Religion one and for the last 30 years, as an extension – governance. This whole power to the people, democracy thing gave most of us a relation and a conversation with ppl who didn’t even know on the street…

no matter what was said n done…I bet my cup, less than 10% of ppl above 15 watch the parliamentary debates live or rerun…n less than 30% followed the local news at 8 or any other time on tvm…

we still like to be told, not to seek or think about governance…how can we, because we are civically illiterate to begin with…

pray 5 times a day, trade fish for subsistence n be an economist on the holhuashi…give me a break

So amma, no matter who anni appoints as the under secretary or eve if he fails pot 300 mill …every1 knew what change was… i.e not maumoon…

now we have that…so, why fight when the war is over...thats wht this is right now...

Believ me, you wont hear that wathan edhey voice for a long while…

not unless Anni shoots someone in the head with a shot gun

…all anni needs to do is not do what maumoon did…

blame all shortcomings on the mess the previous gov left…

n I think thas the most he can do in 5 yrs…nothing much

…in the meantime we wil get back to what we were doing before…n just go on wit our lives…being told…so my advic to amma is…take a chill pill…nothing much can be expected of this "democracy"...
